On 4 March 2022, the Islamic State - Khorasan Province attacked a Shiite mosque in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The attack killed at least 63 people and injured over 190 others.[1]

Background change

During the late 20th and early 21st centuries in Pakistan, Islamist and sectarian attacks have been very common. Thousands of people have been killed. In 2004, their attacks became an insurgency. Three attacks in Peshawar have had triple-digit death tolls. They were a market bombing in 2009, a church bombing in 2013 and a school massacre in 2014. Many attacks have had double-digit death tolls, including those at Shia mosques in 2013 and 2015.

Attack change

On 4 March 2022, a suicide bomber exploded at the Shiite Kucha Risaldar mosque in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.[2][3] The attack killed at least 61 people, including the prayer leader, and injured another 196.[4][5][6][7][8] The next day, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.[9]
