Herbert Howells

English composer, organist, and teacher

Herbert Howells CBE, CH, was an English composer, organist, and teacher. He was born in Lydney, Gloucestershire on 17 October 1892 to Oliver and Elizabeth Howells. He died in London on 23 February 1983. He wrote a lot of church music for the Anglican Church, including several Service settings of the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis. He taught for many years at the Royal College of Music.

One of his best known works is the Hymnus Paradisi, a large, sacred work for choir. His organ works include 2 sets of 3 Psalm-Preludes and a piece called Master Tallis’s Testament.
