Life peer

appointed member of the peerage whose title cannot be inherited

A Life Peer is a member of the British House of Lords, who is appointed to serve for his or her lifetime. The first life peers were made in the 19th century, to help the House of Lords carry out its job as England's highest court, but this is now done by the Supreme Court.
