Romanization System for Japanese Kana change

According to a 1976 agreement between the United States Board on Geographic Names (BGN) and the UK Permanent Committee on Geographical Names (PCGN), a modified Hepburn system is officially used — including the use of the macron. However, according to the en:National Geospacial Intelligence Agency:

"In Japan today, the romanized form of Japanese, romaji, is widely used, particularly on the internet. In this modern usage, long vowels are frequently shown as doubled, rather than with a macron."
