Syntax and vocabulary change

Currently it says: "Up from 1874 Planck studied physics in Munich." I'm a native speaker of English, but I don't understand this sentence. Does this mean "before 1874" or "after 1874" or something else?

"Habilitation" is not a word in my own English vocabulary. This encyclopedia is supposed to keep things to basic English vocabulary, no?Patrick0Moran (talk) 06:42, 8 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
