It is held every year on April 3rd, which corresponds to the day of the death [en; ja] of the first emperor, Emperor Jimmu, and commemorates the spirit of Emperor Jimmu. According to the " Nihon Shoki ," the date of his death was March 11, 586 BC (the 76th year of Emperor Jimmu's reign), but this is converted to April 3 in the Gregorian calendar . The ceremony will take place at the Imperial Mausoleum [en; ja] within the Imperial Palace [ja] and at the Tohoku Mausoleum on Mount Unebi in Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture, which is designated as the tomb of Emperor Jimmu.

The Jinmu Emperor Festival began as a festival to the tomb of Emperor Jinmu on March 11, 1860 ( Man'en 1) during the reign of Emperor Komei at the end of the the Edo period [en; ja] ^[2] It was regularized in the "Rules for the Four Seasons Festivals" established in September 1871 ( Meiji 4), and was later codified in the " Imperial Household Rites Act [ja]" enacted on September 19, 1908 (Meiji 41). The law was abolished on May 2, 1947 ( Showa 22), but the ritual continues to exist as a court ritual.

The rituals of the successive Emperors in the "Imperial Household Rites Law" are as follows:

Grand festivals - Jinmu Emperor Festival, Former Emperor Festival [simple; ja] ^[3], Spring Imperial Ancestors Festival [ja], Autumn Imperial Ancestors Festival, Annual Festivals [ja] of the three generations before the former emperor ^[4]
Small festivals - Regular festivals [fr; en:draft; ja] for the three generations of emperors before the previous emperor ^[5], and annual festivals for the four generations of emperors before the previous emperor, starting with Emperor Suizei

It is as follows.

Like the Emperor's birthday [en; ja], the Sen'ten-sai is changed depending on the succession to the throne [ja], and the Korei-sai is a ceremony to worship the spirits of all the past emperors together at the spring [en; ja] and the autumn equinoxes [en; ja]. Therefore, the Jinmu Tenno-sai is the only ceremony to eternally worship a specific emperor in a grand festival every year, and is treated as a special case as the founder of the imperial line (Imperial Ancestor).

On that day, a ceremony will be held at the Imperial Mausoleum, including a report of the Azuma-yu [ja], and an imperial envoy will be sent to make an offering [ja] to the Tohoku Mausoleum on Mount Unebi. Under the old system, it was stipulated that the Emperor himself would visit [ja] the tomb of Emperor Jimmu and pay his respects during the annual festival [ja] . In addition, worship ceremonies or festivals are held at most shrines throughout Japan, including shrines dedicated to Emperor Jimmu, such as Kashihara Shrine [en; ja] (Nara Prefecture) and Miyazaki Jingū [ja] ( Miyazaki Prefecture ).

As part of the celebratory events, the "Spring Jinmu Festival" will be held around Kashihara Shrine on the weekend around the Emperor Jinmu Festival (April 3rd). The festival will include illuminations of the shrine, a video show, a parade along the approach to the shrine in ancient costumes, a plant market, and a flea market. At Miyazaki Shrine, Yabusame is held on the day of the Emperor Jinmu Festival.

In addition, according to the " Establishment of Holidays for Annual Festivals and Holidays [ja] " and " Matters Concerning Holidays [ja] ," April 3rd was a holiday of the same name from 1874 (Meiji 7) to 1948 (Showa 23). In 2016, the " 2,600th Anniversary of Emperor Jimmu's Birth " was held. ^[6] ^[7]
