Barras, how long?

In length do the article stubs have to be? --TheSneakyRaccoon (talk) 13:06, 2 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

It's not a matter of length, but a matter of establishing notability. You might look through Category:Stubs to get a feel for what stubs on Simple look like.···Katerenka (討論) 13:07, 2 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
(change conflict)  A bit more then one sentence with only five words and little information. Otherwise the article is not helpful and will be deleted. Also not that it doesn't help to link nearly every word and number. Please tak more time when creating articles and make longer ones. It's better to have one good article then having 100 one-line stubs with little or no meaning. Regards --Barras talk 13:10, 2 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Nameless User's football stubs

Hey Barras. I saw you deleted a couple of these today. I think it would be a good idea to let NU know that you're starting to consider some of his stubs as quickly deletable. I'm not sure myself, as the articles you deleted had plenty of claims of notability and also existed on several other wikis... The Rambling Man (talk) 15:55, 2 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I will drop him a line. The couple were only two, namely Víctor Fernández and Miguel Ángel Lotina. His articles have normally some tables with some more information about the player. The two I deleted had a sentence that they're spanish manager and a small infobox. I've no problem when he's going to recreate them with the "standard" he uses on his other creastions (some tables). These two are not really worthwhile to keep them. And interwikis aren't (at least not for me) a sign of notability. Kind regards --Barras talk 16:01, 2 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
No but they provide an indicator that the article may be useful and probably doesn't qualify for speedy deletion - that's why we have RFD after all. As a recent manager of Real Zaragoza (Fernandez), that certainly does assert notability while not being able to verify it. You could ask for citations to prove the claims, but in my mind there's no doubt that particular article wasn't speediable... The Rambling Man (talk) 16:08, 2 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
OK! Note on Nameless User's talk page removed, articles restored. Now we have two articles hanging around for the next years that are pretty useful. However, I go and do some other useful things and not trying to keep the wiki clean. Best --Barras talk 16:23, 2 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry you feel that way, but you really need to consider what you mean by "does not assert notability" when the article clearly stated he was a manager of top-league European teams. Yes, it didn't verify the sources but that can be fixed, and all I'm suggesting is that I didn't agree with your speedy deletions. Adding a reference to each article will take a few moments, and I'll ensure they're not orphaned either. The Rambling Man (talk) 18:10, 2 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
You don't need to be sorry. I think you know that I hate such kinds of articles, especially because I know that even non-native speakers can do a good article work instead of putting up one liners with nearly no information. However, I know that I mostly disagree with other thoughts, but I respect it. If you want the articles back, so it's not a problem for me. --Barras talk 18:25, 2 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
No worries, I fixed up the tags that you added, both are now referenced and neither are orphans. All good. I just felt that, even though you may not like NU's swathes of new pages, you could have done him the courtesy of telling him before speedily deleting a couple of his latest pages. Not that he communicates much, that is...! The Rambling Man (talk) 18:27, 2 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello again. Could you please give me the flood flag? I'm going to be doing more stub sorting.

Also, the link you gave me on my talk page to the IRC website doesn't seem to work. When I try to open the link, an error message pops up and says that Firefox doesn't know how to open the link. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks, Megan McCarty|talkchanges 15:25, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hey Megan, an admin should be flagging you now, i've just pinged some on IRC. For the IRC link to work you need an IRC client. about the wiktionary thing, i will do what you say, but in all do respect, isn't it better if the reader gets a definition of the word instead of worrying about which one looks nicer? I-on 18:27, 8 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Of course it's good when the reader gets information. The thing is, that we do so normally, because the definitions on simple are often easier. We are here on the simple Wikipedia and cooperate with the simple Wiktionary. An article that is proposed to become a good one, we get the articles created on WT. -Barras talk 18:31, 8 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

en:WP

Thanks for the tip, I'll follow it in future. However, I wish you had not changed the title. We're not bound to use enWP titles, and in this case I made a deliberate decision to use the much more familiar title of nematocyst. Macdonald-ross (talk) 18:24, 8 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, in our mainspace we use the same names as enwp uses. The probably more common name should then be a redirect. The move is just what we do normally, means use the names enwiki uses. Regards -Barras talk 18:26, 8 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Barras, thanks for your input on the talk page. I have come up with a modified proposal that includes most suggestions. Would you like to have another look and leave a comment on Wikipedia talk:Service awards - Peterdownunder (talk) 11:42, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have finished adapting the Service Awards and adapting all the templates. Can you have a look at them before we start using them? I also thought about your comments about rewarding quality work. There were a number of awards on enwiki which covered Good Articles, Featured articles, DYK and other things. I have imported and adapted these, Other awards so can you have a look at these as well. This should give us a much bigger range of suitable awards. --Peterdownunder (talk) 06:22, 19 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

User categories

Hi Barras. Quick query - what are the criteria (if any) for creating categories for users? There must be some, otherwise we could have Category:Wikipedians who cannot spell triskadecaphobiac. :) Thanks in advance, Lauryn (utc) 17:03, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I don't think we have a single or special criterion for user categories. In this case, I'd say the normal criteria for categories apply which means a category should have at least three article or in this case users in it. And I doubt the usefulness of the mentioned category. I could've a category for all English words I use on my userpage that say I can't spell it correctly. ;) Barras talk 17:09, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the speedy response. I asked for two reasons, namely I just deleted Category:Arachnophobic users as empty and incorrectly named and I've been wanting to create Category:LGBT Wikipedians for awhile, but there are only two users in that category, so I suppose I'll have to wait. :) Thanks again. Lauryn (utc) 17:12, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well, in some cases it might be OK to have a category with two users in it. May I ask what LGBT means? Sorry, but I'm not always the best in knowing English short cuts. Barras talk 17:14, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
No problem. LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, so all Wikipedians that are comfortable and fall into any of those four groups would be welcome to add themselves. Lauryn (utc) 17:17, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ah, ok. Thanks for clarification. If you really want it and know another person who would use the category, so feel free to use it. No objections from me. Barras talk 17:20, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Since I noticed this on RC. I agree that we don't have any specific criteria. But I would note that fairly often anything that hasn't had to do with editing the wiki has tended to fall at rfd. Mostly I have only seen categories or locations people live survive, and even some of those have been deleted or merged in the past. So things like Category:Wikipedian ice hockey fans or whatever get deleted. -DJSasso (talk) 17:22, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well, of course people can request the deletion. Then it is up t the community to decide. By the way, a link for Lauryn. Barras talk 17:24, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Oh I know, I was just pointing out there has been a history of user categories getting deleted. Especially if there is only one in the category. I personally have no problem with them. Some people just red link them from their pages until they see 3 people in them, which I suppose might be gaming the system but works for me. -DJSasso (talk) 17:38, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
