DYK

Hello. Is there a way we can delete the nominations that have had a DYKno for a while. The nominations area is flooded. Is there a way we can block nominations until there empty. The holding area is getting flooded as well. Please write back. --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 00:31, 28 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

None of the nominations at DYK are currently eligible to be removed, although I have done some pruning to tidy it up following a particular user's over-zealous use of the outdent and bold functions. I've added an additional queue and sped up the DYK update rate to 5 days which should help things, however there is no way that we can 'stop' new nominations from being made aside from closing the whole process - only suggest that people don't post new ones. And that's what I am going to say: stop posting DYK nominations for the forseeable future. There are currently thirty, yes, 30 nominations in the queues, another four on hold and a further six awaiting approval: 40 in total. At that number there are enough DYKs to keep the section going until the 15th August (2nd September if we go back to 7 day updates) which is ludicrous. Calm down, guys - it's not a race about who can get the most short articles onto a section. Why not just pick one article, work on it to PGA/PVGA status for a bit and come back when we're getting short. It's okay for the nominations page to be empty... GoblinBot4 query

Hey Bluegoblin7. I've been sitting around in the CVN channel on IRC, and I've noticed that GoblinBot4 seems to give vandals level 1 warnings even if they've already been given {{welcomevandal}}, which can waive a level 1 warning. Is there any way you could program it so that it gives them a level 2 warning instead? TCN7JM 08:58, 25 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I will commit the new code in a few hours. Chenzw  Talk  09:29, 25 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

broken images

I am in the process of finishing up the cleaning up the backlog for broken images. There are pages listed at Category:Pages with broken file links in your userspace. As you are an active user, I don't want to go around editing your userspace without permission, advanced warnings, etc so I am wondering if you could look at the pages in question and clear the errors. --Creol(talk) 16:55, 27 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Your changes to Template:Infobox London station

Your changes to this template have added these categories (and maybe others) to various articles:

Should these categories be defined? --Auntof6 (talk) 19:16, 27 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

There are other categories, several named something like "Rail transport stations in London fare zone 2". Same question for those. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 19:19, 27 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

The categories in question are maintenance categories created when the articles do not have exit/usage date for a particular time frame (0910 = 2009/2010). Our articles were mainly created back in 07/08 so they have no up to date info on usage. The easy solution is just to grab the up-to-date infobox from En. The only issue I am seeing with this is caused when a {{coord}} template is present - the infobox already supplies coordinates so the 2 of them together are setting off a warning. A quick pass through the articles updating the infoboxes may remove the need for many of them but they could be needed at some later date if new articles are added without the needed information. I would suggest trimming the dates checked to 2009 and forward. Finding the data for the older dates is likely not that easy and does not provide a lot of extra information.
The fare zone cats are different as they deal with which zone the stop operates in. This is actual data and not maintenance data and should be categorized as such.--Creol(talk) 20:21, 27 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
The 1112 cat is definitely needed as many of the stations will not have data for 2012. --Creol(talk) 21:49, 27 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks to Creol for responding to this whilst I was away from my computer. I would also suggest that we cut back to 2009 and forward (mainly because although I have the statistics for earlier it's going to be less effort to go through and get each one included!), and I'll do this later tonight. I'll be periodically going through each station, line-by-line, over the next few months to improve them from the stubs they are at the moment, and hopefully these maintenance categories will then be able to be deleted. As mentioned, with the zonal categories these are actual data as they are included as such across London, and will be used by mainline suburban rail articles too. They may be fairly empty for now, but as mentioned I'm going to look to increase coverage over the summer to pad them out. HTH, Goblin 19:25, 2 July 2013 (UTC) I ♥ Kennedy!Reply

DYK (2)

Hello Bluegoblin7. As you can see, I have a lot of DYK facts under the Wikipedia DYK section. Their on hold until my nomination limit if lowered. Can you check if there's anything in need of fixing. You can write any suggestions under the Note section. --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 03:31, 3 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

No, because that is not how DYK works. As I pointed when you asked me above (#DYK), there is no need to constantly be finding and writing hooks. Indeed it's completely against the idea and spirit of DYK - it is not a race or a competition. Chill out, try something else for a bit. Goblin 03:42, 3 July 2013 (UTC) I ♥ Kennedy!Reply

Commodore Nutt

I've removed CN from the GAC list. It has failed. I'm the only contributor. It has failed. Please do not return it to the list. Oregonian2012 (talk) 04:25, 3 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

An article that you yourself have written cannot be failed. It is 'withdrawn', not failed, and, as I pointed out, it must be denoted as such as not simply removed. I'm not going to revert again, but a heads up that this would be considered as disruptive editing. Chenzw has added it to the archive so it's all fine for now. However, I'm not sure you understand how PGA (Not GAC) works here: during the review phase it is likely that a number of editors will make changes to the article to help you on its way to being promoted, automatically fulfilling criteria 3. That said, if you do not want the article to be a GA, why on earth did you waste everyone's time (mine included) by posting it there in the first place. Again, disruptive editing... PGA (Shabbat)

With all due respect, I did not see an instruction anywhere to add a header. That's why I didn't, even though looking back it obviously makes very good sense to do that. Can you show me where I missed the instruction? Thanks.

That said, I'd appreciate your feedback on the article, too. StevenJ81 (talk) 00:51, 1 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Apologies, you are correct: I see you have since added in the relevant instruction. It either wasn't there or was removed a while back (I've not had chance to look, but likely the latter as I believe it was <!--commented out-->), which I clearly missed when I made the relevant change. So, again, apologies for the confusion, and thanks for fixing it. I'll try and take a look at the article in due course, although I tend to stay away from article reviews. Goblin 16:18, 2 July 2013 (UTC) I ♥ Bsadowski1!Reply
Wasn't commented out. Was just missing. I found the code intact at PVGA and copied it back. StevenJ81 (talk) 12:00, 3 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
No I mean when it was there before it was commented out - people have a habit of using the example rather than copying it. No harm done either way. Goblin 15:21, 3 July 2013 (UTC) I ♥ GoblinBots!Reply

A Generic Rant

I'm putting this here because it needs to be said and there's nowhere appropriate to say it. I know I get quite a few talk page stalkers so it will probably get seen. Anyway...

What is it with all the (pointless) 'wikilove' flying around at the moment? A day doesn't go by without someone getting a barnstar for 'something' (read: nothing). We're here to build an encyclopaedia, not to MySpace (That should probably be updated to 'Facebook' - why even uses MySpace anymore?!) - which is something that seems to have been increasingly commonplace with the latest crop of newbies.

Now, I'm not saying that newbies are bad (they're not), but many don't seem to understand what it is we're doing here. PGA/PVGA are all but dead, the standards of DYK have slipped ridiculously low in preference for a 'let's nominate as many articles as we can' attitude, and all in all the hard work of the past 4-5 years to build the wiki's reputation are, inn my eyes, slipping, and once more we're becoming a bit of a playground.

Don't get me wrong: it's always waxed and wained here, and that's healthy for new ideas and keeping things fresh. But right now we seem to be back at the point where we're tolerating disruptive users without a clue for far too long before acting: if people are a net-negative let's get back to the old days where we try mentoring early on and, if that doesn't work, ban them. Of course, we should always assume good faith, but that does only go so far. We're not a haven for users who have been blocked or banned elsewhere (and indeed have a policy for that), but people seem to be forgetting this recently.

Anyway. On that note, I'm off to do some more tidying up and clerking of processes, and then, once that's done, I might even get around to doing some content work. Goblin 16:14, 2 July 2013 (UTC) I ♥ Mh7kJ!Reply

You're not alone, BG. I agree with much of that. I've been tempted to ask 2 or 3 of our editors to just stop giving out barnstars and other Wikilove. --Auntof6 (talk) 20:06, 2 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Can you feel the love?! Do I need to slap you with a cookie or bake you a fish to get you to lighten up? :P To be fair I also agree with everything you've said... Kennedy (talk) 21:09, 2 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Nice to know my thoughts are shared. Don't get me wrong, wikilove has a place but not every day for pointless things as seems to have been happening lately. Goblin 22:08, 2 July 2013 (UTC) I ♥ Gordonrox24!Reply

...and then when people do actually start contributing content they can't follow simple instructions and/or they are so fluid with their decisions that it's a waste of everyone's time to actually follow through anything - because the moment something doesn't go their way, or they have to make actual effort, they'll just withdraw it and complain at any attempt you make to actually assist them in achieving goals. Good lord. Goblin 05:08, 3 July 2013 (UTC) I ♥ Auntof6!Reply

So ... what's too much, anyway? I have given a couple of barnstars in the last several weeks and months. I even created a barnstar ("The Simple Barnstar") exactly because I felt the unique goals of this wiki deserved a barnstar specifically designed to reward this wiki's project goals.
I'm a relative newbie here, but I'm also working at content. (I have an article that has a good chance of being the first in a year to make GA.) So if you want to rant about this, give us a guideline so we will do the right thing. StevenJ81 (talk) 11:57, 3 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
About barnstars and wikilove: no, you are doing fine ;). BG7 was referring to some particular editors who give out barnstars, plates of cookies, smiles, "gold" awards, patriotic[citation needed] messages on an almost daily basis... an oversupply of such things will cause their individual value to fall drastically. Chenzw  Talk  12:06, 3 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
As Chenzw alludes, this is certainly not aimed at you, Steven. You were very much not on my radar when I wrote this, and that is still the case. To respond, however, giving out a couple of barnstars now and then, and creating one for the wiki to reward people working towards our common goals, is certainly not a bad thing - it's the over zealous use of the things that are given out near daily. With regards to content, again, you're doing nothing wrong and I can't fault you - as mentioned I will try and take a look at your PGA when I get chance; if not I'll be more than happy to do the appropriate clerking when the time comes. And because most people know which editors I am taking about, here's a case in point made in the last few minutes. Goblin 15:54, 3 July 2013 (UTC) I ♥ Yottie!Reply

I must say I do find it somewhat ironic that its you ranting about it. But I have always thought barnstars and all such things were a bit silly. -DJSasso (talk) 16:01, 3 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Not really sure where you're going with this...? Goblin 16:02, 3 July 2013 (UTC) I ♥ GoblinBots!Reply
Just that I agree...but find it funny that you are ranting about it saying people shouldn't care so much about what others are doing (ie their wikilove) while at the same time you are caring about what those people are doing with their wikilove. ;) -DJSasso (talk) 16:06, 3 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Nelson Mandela

Hey Bluegoblin7. I've worked a lot on Nelson Mandela and I'm thinking about making the article into a good article. Can you help me improve the article. I don't want to make the nomination official until all problems are fixed within the article. Please write back on my talk page. Can you help me? TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 19:42, 3 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

In all honesty I'm uncomfortable making this a PGA at the moment. Mandela's ongoing health problems means that the article is inevitably going to change fairly frequently, and no sooner that it gets fixed up there may well be more information to make. Although PGA doesn't have to be comprehensive it's a personal preference that it must at least be up-to-date, and major changes to a GA are never a good thing. Criteria 1 and 5 are also probably most relevant here. As I think it's probably unlikely that Mandela will recover in the near future, I'd suggest waiting for this until he passes away - perhaps a bit of a negative tone, and I'm certainly not wishing it to happen!, but that would be my two cents worth. HTH, Goblin 21:21, 3 July 2013 (UTC) I ♥ Fr33kman!Reply
I happen to agree with that. And let me add that it would be one thing if Nelson Mandela were already a GA or VGA, and current events required rapid changes. We could all understand and live with that, and probably not demote the article during the transition period, as long as someone is trying to keep up with things. But to actually put this through PGA review at the moment is really tricky.
That said, Goblin, maybe you can help Chicago with "the other parts of the article" in the meanwhile anyway. StevenJ81 (talk) 21:51, 3 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Spot on, Steven. Although that said I think most of our current (V)GAs are out of date - a project for the summer to try and tidy them all up a bit... I'll try and take a look at Chicago when I get chance - very busy IRL at the moment so not got too much time to look at articles. Goblin 21:55, 3 July 2013 (UTC) I ♥ Yottie!Reply
Okay. So let say that Mandela were to die tomorrow. How long do I have to wait to make the article a good article? --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 22:26, 3 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Wait until all the facts are known about his death, and the article is 'stable' and as complete as it can be. Then add three weeks (the time between nomination and promotion). Goblin 22:44, 3 July 2013 (UTC) I ♥ Gordonrox24!Reply

Ha, nope - desysopped about three years ago now if I remember correctly, and probably two years since the last RfA? Anyway, I've been pretty inactive during that time and I still wouldn't say I am particularly active, so I am not sure what the outcome of an RfA would be. I must admit that I haven't really put much thought into it, but I shall do so now and get back in due course. Talk page stalkers: your views are welcomed.
