In 2022, the United States had a major shortage of infant formula as a result of the 2021–2022 global supply chain crisis. It was also caused by a large scale product recall.[1][2]
As of May 14, nationwide out-of-stock rates were reported to be 43%, up from 31% two weeks before, with normal out-of-stock rate being 10%.[3]
In many places, store shelves are empty. Delaware, Kansas, and Tennessee were the most hard-hit states.
As of mid-May, manufacturers and retailers expected a months-long delay before formula stocks would be fully restored.[4]
