The character is depicted as an evil psychopathic doll (voiced by Brad Dourif), a serial killer named Charles Lee "Chucky" Ray, known as the "Lakeshore Strangler", whose soul is transferred inside a "Good Guy doll" toy following a voodoo ritual in order to avoid going to Hell. In the 2019 reboot, Chucky (voiced by Mark Hamill) is an AI doll, gone out of control, and determined to kill people.

Despite being inside the body of a doll, Chucky can feel pain and can bleed when injured, and has a large scar with stitches on his face. He used many weapons including guns, but mostly an axe or a knife to kill people who buy or sees him killing someone. He has also killed a person with a voodoo ritual. He appeared in 8 movies. He has a wife, Tiffany Valentine (also a killer doll) and one daughter/son who has mental issues (also a doll).
