Countdown to Extinction is the fifth studio album by American thrash metal band Megadeth. Countdown to Extinction was released on July 6, 1992. It was released through Capitol Records. The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 and sold 128,000 copies in the first week.[1]

The album was nominated for Best Metal Performance at the 1993 Grammy Awards.[2] The title track won the Humane Society's Genesis Award for raising awareness for animal rights issues.[3]
