superdivision of plants
Embryophytes are land plants. They are the most familiar kinds of plants, the bryophytes, ferns, gymnosperms and flowering plants. Only a few embryophytes are water plants. Another way of looking at the group is to say they are the Viridiplantae minus the algae. They include the Bryophytes and the vascular plants.
Embryophytes started sometime between the mid-Cambrian and the Ordovician period. Their ancestors were green algae.
