Southern class 455/8 EMU no. 455.821 waits departure on 2R65, 13:35 Epsom Downs to London Victoria. Reached on foot from Tattenham Corner during a re-visit to branches in South London and Surrey on 18 February 2012. Most of the branches on the day were just the 2nd visit ever, originally having been done back in the early 1980s. Epsom Downs has seen many changes. Starting off with 9 platforms to cater for extra trains during race meetings. Over the years the line has been cut back in length and station reduced in size. In 1989, the line was further reduced in length to allow construction of houses. The station buildings were demolished leaving basic shelter facilities and a ticket machine. The line has been singled as well leaving the route as far as Sutton with only an hourly service. Services on the branch are operated using Class 455 or Class 377 EMUs. All services on the branch are stopping services to London Victoria via Norbury, or via Crystal Palace in the evenings. The service via Norbury calls at Banstead, Belmont, Sutton, Carshalton Beeches, Wallington, Waddon, West Croydon, Selhurst, Thornton Heath, Norbury, Streatham Common, Balham, Wandsworth Common, Clapham Junction, Battersea Park and London Victoria. Services via Crystal Palace call at Banstead, Belmont, Sutton, Carshalton Beeches, Wallington, Waddon, West Croydon, Norwood Junction, Crystal Palace, Gipsy Hill, West Norwood, Streatham Hill, Balham, Wandsworth Common, Clapham Junction, Battersea Park and London Victoria. There is no Sunday service. |
