Object history
Deutsch: Der bis 1805 ritterschaftliche, unter vorderösterreichischer Landeshoheit stehende Ort entwickelte sich nach dem Anschluss an die Eisenbahn 1863/ 1866 zu einem bedeutenden Industriestandort. 1899 wurde Singen zur Stadt erhoben. Erste Bemühungen um ein Wappen für die Gemeinde, die im 19. Jahrhundert nur Schriftsiegel geführt hatte, hatten 1895 keinen Erfolg. Wenige Wochen nach der Stadterhebung nahm man das vom Generallandesarchiv entworfene Wappen an. Der St. Galler Bär soll auf die schon im 8. und 9. Jahrhundert belegten Besitzungen des Klosters in Singen hinweisen. In einer St. Galler Urkunde aus dem Jahre 787, die in Singen ausgestellt wurde, wird der Ort erstmals erwähnt. Der Schild in den Tatzen des Bären zeigt das Wappen der Herren von Singen, die im 11. und 12. Jahrhundert nachweisbar sind. Die Flagge wurde im Jahre 1926 angenommen.
