El escudo con bordadura cortado y partido. En el cuartel superior diestro tiene un creciente cornado o luna en plata, en campo de sable, como representación del culto al astro sagrado de los chibchas, llamado por ellos Chíe. En el cuartel superior siniestro trae una cruz en sable tras un libro abierto en campo de gules, que simboliza la religión cristiana y la lengua castellana, legado español. En el cuartel inferior diestro trae un morrión en plata sobre un arcabuz en campo de gules como símbolo de la conquista y de la sangre vertida en la epopeya. En el cuartel inferior siniestro trae un tunjo de oro en campo de sinope, que representa el arte y la riqueza del pueblo agrícola chibcha que diera origen a la leyenda de El dorado. La bordadura en azul trae siete (7) ranas y dos (2) serpientes simétricas distribuidas, que simbolizan el origen acuático de su mitología y el carácter sagrado de Sie o el agua. A manera de corona mural, el escudo ostenta El Puente del Común, como joya de la arquitectura colonial y como símbolo tradicional del municipio.
