После завершения портрета Петра III, выполненного по заказу Святейшего Синода, А.П. Антропов пишет копию со своей работы для Правительствующего Сената. Позднее, в 1928 году, через Государственный музейный фонд портрет попал в Третьяковскую галерею.

Художнику за этот портрет были выплачены изрядные по тому времени деньги — 400 рублей.
