Template:Definition/doc
This is a documentation subpage for Template:Definition. It may contain usage information, categories and other content that is not part of the original template page. |
Usage
changeOn Simple English Wikipedia, uncommon terms should be replaced with simpler terms wherever possible. If using a more specific term cannot be avoided, it should be made clear in simple terms on the page that uses it. The template {{definition}}
can be used to show a definition or explanation of a term in a tool tip. The template {{definition with link}}
can also be used if the term being defined should link to another section of the page, or to another page on Wikipedia such as a glossary.
These templates should not be used in place of an explanation of the term within the body of the article if one is needed. They also should not be used for abusing the use of complex terms where simple terms are more suitable. These templates might not be appropriate if a term is only slightly uncommon or is not important to the main topic. Also remember that Wikipedia is not a dictionary. Explanations of terms should be notable and appropriate to an encyclopedia. The terms should always be relevant to the page where they are used.
Syntax
changeThe template {{definition}}
is used with the syntax {{definition|term|meaning of the term}}
. The template {{definition with link}}
can be used as either {{definition with link|term|meaning of the term}}
(where the term is also the name of the link) or {{definition with link|link=page or section to be linked|term|meaning of the term}}
. For example:
- Using without a link:
{{definition|coronation|the ceremony of declaring a new monarch, such as a king or queen}}
— gives coronation
- Using with a link to the Wikipedia page of the same name:
{{definition with link|coronation|the ceremony of declaring a new monarch, such as a king or queen}}
— gives coronation
- Using with a link to a Wikipedia page of a different name:
{{definition with link|link=Coronation|crowned|to be declared the new monarch, such as king or queen}}
— gives crowned
- Using with a link to a section on the current page:
{{definition with link|link=#Coronation|coronation|the ceremony of declaring a new monarch, such as a king or queen}}
— gives coronation (which would link to a section called "Coronation" on the current page)
- Using with a link to a Wiktionary entry:
{{definition with link|link=wikt:coronation|coronation|the ceremony of declaring a new monarch, such as a king or queen}}
— gives coronation
