History

change

The university was first created in 1654 in Duisburg. It had four areas of study: Theology, Medicine, Law, and Arts. It was closed in 1818 because of competition from better universities. Its library and ceremonial sceptre were sent to the new University of Bonn.[8]

In 1968, a new university was founded in Duisburg and later named Gerhard Mercator University. In 2003, this university merged with the University of Essen to form the University of Duisburg-Essen.
