ASHER KIMCHI

Asher Kimchi, MD, is the Founder and Chairman of the International Academy of Cardiology. He holds the academic title of Clinical Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA and at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California.

BIOGRAPHY & RESEARCH PROFILE

Asher Kimchi, MD, was born in 1946 in Tel Aviv, Israel, to Yaacov Kimchi, an education administrator for the school system at the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality and Rivka Kimchi, a housewife. Both parents immigrated at a young age with their families to Israel from Poland before WWII.

Dr. Kimchi received his medical degree from Hebrew University, Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem (1964-1972).  In 1972 he enlisted in the Israeli Air Force as a Flight Surgeon and was promoted to Commander of the Israeli Aero Medical Evacuation Unit (January, 1974 thru June 1978). While serving in the Israeli Air Force, he received the military rank of Major.

Dr. Kimchi completed his Cardiology Fellowship at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem (1975-1978) followed by a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California, Davis (1978-1981). He completed two fellowships at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles; Cardiology-Clinical Research (1981-1982) and Critical Care (1982-1983). In 1983, he became Attending Physician in the Division of Cardiology at Cedars-Sinai.

Asher Kimchi, MD, is the immediate past Clinical Chief of the Division of Cardiology at Cedars-Sinai (2013-2016) and from 2010 to present he has served as Co-Medical Director of the Preventive and Consultative Heart Center of Excellence at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute. He holds the academic title of Clinical Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA and at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He is also a past president of the Greater Los Angeles Affiliate of the American Heart Association (July 2005 thru June 2006).

Dr. Kimchi established and has served as Chair of the International Academy of Cardiology since 1997. He started the World Congress on Heart Disease and has served as its chair for 27 years. He has presided over 23 international congresses on heart failure and heart disease (1989-2016). He is an editor or co-editor of 12 books, and his scientific articles on the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease and heart failure have appeared in prestigious peer-reviewed journals, including Circulation, the American Journal of Cardiology, JAMA Internal Medicine and the American Heart Journal. He has presented his scientific work at numerous national and international conferences. He serves on the editorial board of the journal CARDIOLOGY. Over the past several years, Kimchi’s research has focused on the management of patients hospitalized with decompensated heart failure. The research involves designing and evaluating interventions to improve the care transition from hospital to home to reduce readmissions and potentially improve morbidity and mortality.
