Question change

Why lowercase letters? And why did you remove my comment? :p --Bsadowski1 09:53, 6 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

We are trying not to feed it.. --Bsadowski1 09:54, 6 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
lcase returns the argument in lowercase; giving it something in uppercase will therefore never match... --Eptalon (talk) 09:58, 6 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Okay. You should of said something in the filter comments... --Bsadowski1 09:59, 6 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
How come you put tagging on and now it's disabled? I am trying to prevent a persistent vandal from vandalizing. --Bsadowski1 15:00, 6 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

(<-) I haven't touched the state (disabled/enabled) of the filter before; now I ticked the "enabled" box... --Eptalon (talk) 15:03, 6 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Strange because I thought I had enabled it. --Bsadowski1 16:31, 6 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Move requested change

Could you move Erosion to Soil erosion? Its content is soil-erosion-specific, and I want to create a general account of erosion, as in enWP. I can't make these moves, apparently. Thanks. Macdonald-ross (talk) 06:27, 8 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Soil erosion on enWP redirects to erosion, so is the move necessary? Peterdownunder (talk) 07:02, 8 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
  1. Erosion is the main concept, Soil erosion is a sub-concept. If both are treated on the same page, the page name should be 'Erosion'.
  2. On Simple, I would plan to keep the Soil erosion page separate. It is primarily a problem of human farming methods, and has its own social history angle. Macdonald-ross (talk) 09:41, 8 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
I moved the page, and left a redirect (from Erosion, to Soil erosion). I trust Macdonald-ross. When both pages are there, we can still discuss merging them, if the concepts are "closely related". Note however, that in the contexts of material science, medicine, and computer graphics one can also talk about "erosion"; these concepts have nothing to do with the erosion of soil which is geological. --Eptalon (talk) 14:45, 8 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Some help, please change

Hi there, Mr. Admin. Some dude called IanP had a brief chat with me on both of our talk pages and he's changed his signature to I am a bassist, which he claims to be a parody of mine. I think he's misusing the signature function and treating WP like a social network, and most important of all, I don't want him to be my meatpuppet. Can you ask him to stop this non-constructive behaviour? P.S. keep me anonymous. I am a violinist (talk) 11:31, 21 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

(tps) I shall have a word on his talk page and also bring this up over at WP:AN, unless someone else sees this first. I've given him several warnings with regards to using the site as a social network, enough is enough. Thanks, Goblin 12:35, 21 January 2011 (UTC) I ♥ The Rambling Man!Reply
Agreed. I think it is a good idea to bring it up at AN. Pmlineditor (t · c · l) 12:36, 21 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Halophile change

Feeling a bit negative today... I don't think the importance & uses section could be enlarged much with any benefit. Also, I'm not anxious to spend time on PGAs because it interfers with time I spend on new articles.

I'm distressed by the low standard of GAs and VGAs on this wiki; most of them seem not even worth proposing. Halophile is an OK page, but nothing more. The standard of English is dreadful (I'm not talking about its simplicity, but its lack of style and flow). Personally, I wouldn't have dreamed of putting up a page in this condition, but I won't say so on the PGA page.

I'd most like to see an upgrade of the criteria to include (as enWP does) a clear statement that articles must be well written. Again, I won't propose changes in the system because it's pointless. Certain people always vote against change, and nothing I've supported has ever got through.

The big plus of Simple is that good pages once put up are much more stable than in enWP, though of course much less read. Sorry for being negative, I appreciate your asking. Macdonald-ross (talk) 11:22, 24 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

I cannot change the crowd, and you see yourself how much effort is currently put into the GA/VGA process. Even if we can "re-adjust" the criteria (and find some way of saying "well-written" that is quantifiable/verifiable), I doubt the community will put much effort in producing "GA/VGA"-quality articles. I will start discussion what we do regarding these articles (probably on WP:ST), but I can imagine what the outcome will be....--Eptalon (talk) 18:37, 24 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

IP deletion change

First of all, I will probably not respond again as I am away for long periods of time. We have several computers on the IP side so it doesn't matter if people know my IP. After all, I edited quite a lot as an IP. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 20:01, 9 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

That's not what my intent was; User pages are only edited by the user itself, usually. Leaving your IP would allow people to connect a link easily (hence the oversight). Do ont worry about it too much; continue editing as an IP if you like, but don't edit your user page as one; this was the reason for the oversight. --Eptalon (talk) 22:08, 9 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi! change

Hi! I haven't done much on Simple, I started Dejima and wanted some feedback. Am I on the right track? What is the main pointer you can give me? (FYI, I'm familiar with the wikipedia family, so know the basics (see primarily Commons:User:Deadstar etc.)). Thanks for your help. Deadstar (talk) 11:23, 16 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

As far as I can tell the article looks good, there are certain issues (references get their own section; generally, punctuation is before the ref tag, perhaps use the {{cite book}},{{cite web}} templates) but they are very small. We do have a template, {{enwp based}} for attribution, where we copied most from enwp, and then simplified it. I cannot comment on the content, as I am not familiar with it, but I'd say the article is a good start. You can look at Good and Very good articles for examples; these are the two categories we have of "better-quality" articles, in English, they call them "featured article", I think. Anyway, I think that article is a good start, and I look forward to your contributions... - No one will tell you, but first and foremost, this Wikipedia needs editors. Anyway, I hope you have fun editing here.... --Eptalon (talk) 11:54, 16 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for that - as I am mainly active on Commons, I have very little experience with references and tags etc. so will have to learn. Will keep your comments in mind. Kind regards, Deadstar (talk) 12:04, 16 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Proposal. for GoogleTrans-Speak to be a gadget on simple Wikipedia change

As one of the aims for the simple English wiki is to help people learn English, I propose my GoogleTrans-Speak gadget for the wiki.

Using GoogleTrans a popup will appear near the cursor, having a foreign language translation of the word (or selected text < 500 characters), when the cursor is over a word in a web page and the SHIFT key is pressed.

The help file on the enwiki for the gadget is at:

en:User:Endo999/GoogleTrans

The gadget has been running on the enwiki for around 18 months now and has had around 8500 installs (after 6 months of use). It is currently running on 12 wikis.

It can be run on the simple enwiki by including the following javascript in your vector.js file:

importScript("User:Endo999/GoogleTrans.js");

This version has the following text to speech addition:

if you select some text (<4000 characters), put the cursor within that text, and hold the ESCape key down for a second, then a sound bar will appear. By clicking on the play bar of the sound bar, you will then hear the text selected.

The idea is that people wishing to learn English may not just want the translation of a word or two (or a sentence or two) they don't know, but also may wish to hear the sentence to train their ears (and thus learn to listen to English as well as read it).

I use the gadget (on my private test system) to read French and Spanish webpages, including the eswiki and the frwiki, since I can read those languages but cannot understand spoken speech of those tongues.

The Text To Speech is actually done on my LINUX box in Canberra Australia, so I would like to try out the feature on a small wiki (like the Simple wiki) so the number of requests isn't too large.

Open Source Text to Speech systems are used:

   Festival for English and Spanish
   Espeak for the other languages
Mbrola contributes the voices for espeak in French and some other languages.

On Firefox 3.5+ a HTML5 audio tag plays an OGG sound file. On IE9 a HTML5 audio tag plays an MP3 sound file On other systems, Flash is needed, a Flash sound bar will play an MP3 sound file.

I think some people learning English may like to play a computer voice of some text in wiki articles. It's a good way to learn to listen to English. You can have the translation into your native language, and then you can listen to the English text selected right in front of you. Listening to the radio and TV is often difficult because the native speakers speak too fast. Festival TTS does not speak too quickly.

You can play the sound bar more than once if you need to listen several times.

It's a good language learning tool and I thought it would be a good gadget for the simple English wiki, which is a language learning wiki.

I have added some sentences concerning his life, and created a few red links (to scientists of the time). As to his parents, I am unable to decide whether they merit a link. Question about titles change

Hi, Eptalon, i have a question, is there any policy with regards to titles? I saw this and was trying to make it better adding the taxobox, but i'm not sure if in here they use species name or the common name. Greetings.--Jcaraballo (talk) 19:38, 17 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello there, I have no idea what to use there; checks of a few pages seems to show the common name is used more often though (even if that's probably a bad idea). See Scallop, Gastropoda, Dormouse, rat as examples. But to my knowledge there is no policy, or guideline. --Eptalon (talk) 21:19, 17 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
I read this while on Ep's page. enWP uses both methods, so there is no general rule. If using a common name, the name must really be common: 'sparrow', 'mouse' etc. It may be best to use the words which our typical younger users would search for. Redirecting alternative titles is an absolute must: never forget to do this. Macdonald-ross (talk) 10:06, 24 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I want to make something clear. It shows on Volunteer that it will be copied to the Simple English Wiktionary. Will it be deleted from here? Thanks! Crazymonkey1123 (talk) 00:53, 19 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

The problem with the article, in its current form is that it is a "dictionary definition"; look for example at the EnWP article to see the difference. The article can be changed, so it no longer is that dictionary definition though...--Eptalon (talk) 07:29, 19 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
I don't know how to fix it up so it is not a dictionary definition. If it is imported to the Wiktionary, will the history be merged during the import? Crazymonkey1123 (talk) 00:13, 20 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Just a note, the volunteer page already exists on Wiktionary. So, if we don't want to expand it, we can always add {{Wi}}.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 03:46, 20 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Same content on two articles change

Hi Eptalon. I've come across the article Aude and simplified it a little. But then I noticed the content of the article Tautavel man was nearly the same. Either the second page should be expanded, or the first page should be summarized. And if we summarize Aude then we should copy the simplified/corrected content over. Thoughts? Yottie =talk= 15:13, 13 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

I think it would probably be better to expand "Tautavel man", you'll find resp. material on the French page, which seems to be themost complete. Today, the French departement is known for wine-growing, you will probably have come across the sparkling wine "Blanquette de Limoux"; there is also some tourism (Caracassonne started as a Bastide, there are probably other medieval towns). AFAIK historic tourism is focused on the "Cathars". There is some industry (brick-making). In that context, the "Tautavel Man" is probably only of marginal importance. So, if we can't expand Tautavel man, we could reomve the section from "Aude", and mention it in a sentence, with a link. --Eptalon (talk) 10:43, 14 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good. I'll try to work on both. Thanks, Yottie =talk= 11:20, 14 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Germanic (P|p)aganism change

I came across two articles, Germanic Paganism (upper-case P) and Germanic paganism (lower-case P). You created the one with the lower-case P, so I was wondering if you would take a look at them both and see if they're the same thing. Thanks! --Auntof6 (talk) 04:59, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

As a quick look, the lowercase p version seems to be what was practiced beforehand, and what was later replaced by Christianity. The version with the uppecase P should be merged to Asatru, as inicated. Asatru is the attempt to revive the old (lowercase p) version. Asatru is a religion that does not rely on revelations. Asatru has been a religion since 1972 in Iceland, in most other nordic countries since the mid 1990s. --Eptalon (talk) 20:47, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

The reason is actually why I came to you... I can't find one. It doesn't really give us any useful information on the subject, because the article doesn't tell us anything about the "Asgardians" that Idun supposedly kept young... Hello Eptalon. You're the only person I've seen editing the filters, and I just wanted to let you know that I saw something incorrect. I know that filter 12 is not working as it should; that is why I have posted a respective heading on the admin noticepboard, and changed the filter action from disallowing to simply tagging. When I have time this week-end I will look into making the filter work; ideas include:
  • Separate filters for uppercase and lowercase articles
I need to familiarize myself more with the regular expression syntax used. And yes, I am one of perhaps three people editing the filters.--Eptalon (talk) 08:24, 18 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Update: I have changed the filter, and hope it is running as expected; at the moment, it is only tagging, to see if it works as expected.--Eptalon (talk) 09:51, 21 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

New user that may be trying to impersonate you change

Are you User:Emre002? His or her brand new user page was just created from scratch with user boxes that say he/she is an admin, bureaucrat, checkuser, and a few other things that look a bit fishy. The reason I'm asking you is that when I click on the "verify" link in the checkuser userbox, it comes up with a page with your userid. --Auntof6 (talk) 10:25, 4 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

No, I am not. I will take care of it, though. --Eptalon (talk) 10:31, 4 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
