InvitationEdit

Hi Fr33kman, I see you are still active which means you haven't started the break, or it was very short. In either case, come and join in this weekend's activity of trying to write a short biography. There is a choice of over 200 people to write about. See the details on Wikipedia:Simple talk#This weekend's editing challenge - come and help, Peterdownunder (talk) 01:28, 22 October 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Fr33k. Could you (or another admin in your absence) sort your double redirect please? I couldn't as its been locked. Thanks muchly :) Normandy (talk) 11:34, 25 October 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Simple.wp being used in a courseEdit

Just so you know Carousel is one of several articles being used by students in a course at IUPUI. Your additions are certainly fine and I wouldn't want to dissuade you from editing the article--I simply want to alert you to why it might be edited by someone who is not experienced. -Justin (koavf)TCM☯ 01:44, 11 November 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

A cup of coffee for you!Edit

Welcome back from your breaktime! Feel free to answer. Katarighe (talk) 20:38, 12 November 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Open proxyEdit

Hi Fr33kman! Long time no speak! Since you are online at the moment, I just wanted to let you know that 142.32.208.227 is an open proxy (or at least: is blocked on es.wikipedia for being so). Thanks! -Orashmatash- 17:42, 15 December 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'll talk to them. It is not an open proxy; it's a Canadian government address and should not be blocked. fr33kman 17:47, 15 December 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Quick deletion of Template:Portal/Images/DefaultEdit

The page you wrote, Template:Portal/Images/Default, has been selected for quick deletion. This is because the page was deprecated or replaced by a newer template and are completely unused and not linked to. If you think this page should be kept, please add {{wait}} below the line {{QD}} and say why on the talk page. If the page is already gone, but you think this was an error, you can ask for it to be undeleted. Auntof6 (talk) 20:14, 19 December 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi! Responded to you on my talk page. Also, thanks for that tip about the London Gazette- I didn't know where to look. Osiris (talk) 12:22, 6 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Rusty skillsEdit

It's probably because you have been out awhile but I thought I might point out that Let's Kill Tonight wouldn't have been a speedy because its assertion of notability is that it is a single by a notable band. Remember the threshold of asserting notability is really really low compared to proving it has notability. :) This is definitely one that had to come to Rfd. That being said it was going to get deleted anyways based on the discussion. -DJSasso (talk) 12:43, 7 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Although, that claim to notability is completely invalid as the notability guidelines for songs only points to "independently issued by several notable" groups. It holds as much weight as "Creol is a Wikipedia editor. He is notable because he has a shiny butt." .. Yep, claim of notability is there but not a valid claim as Shiny butt is not a valid point of notability. I always had issues with the wording on that point in the guidelines as what defines a "claim of notability" is a bit confined. A little more leeway into the validity of that claim. (not so much the verifiability - thats RFD territory- but if the claim meets a listed point of notability) --Creol(talk) 13:11, 7 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
To avoid speedy deletion you only need a claim, you don't need a valid claim. A valid claim is what you proove at RfD. In other words to avoid speedy deletion you only need to say why the subject might be notable. You don't need to proove its notable. That is RfD ground. Which is why the barrier is much much lower. All we are doing is stopping the immediate deletion so that its notability can be proven. -DJSasso (talk) 13:28, 7 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
First off, "rusty skills"! Nothing rusty about em. :P Yes, the assertion was technically there but I also felt it to be invalid per Creol. The point here is that the proper thing was done in the end; the article was deleted. Personally I've noticed a trend at RFD where more and more QDs were being taken there and usually by newer admins. fr33kman 11:41, 17 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
True but the whole point that criteria is that only a claim needs to be made, it doesn't need to be valid. In other words there is a case to be argued so shouldn't be deleted without allowing the case to be made. If anything I have noticed the trend here lately is to delete via speedy far to many things that shouldn't be speedied. We are way to lax on our delete policy lately. -DJSasso (talk) 13:36, 17 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Re: Decline QDEdit

Thanks for taking care of that. I do understand your response to "fix it not bin it". AGF is important, but can be abused. This user has been indef blocked on En for "repeated MOS violations" and doesn't seem to be acting on feedback on his Talk page. When I see blocked users from En repeat the same behavior here, I try to give a few chances, but how far does AGF extend? I really mean that as an honest question. Am I being "stricter" than the community consensus? Thanks for your help. Gotanda (talk) 02:53, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hmm, but we are not enwiki right? We can take some time to see if the user can be engaged with and taught how to edit here. As a more tight-knit community we might be able to help more. The talk history does show a willingness to talk to the community so ... fr33kman 02:57, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK. I'll pause for a bit. I guess I was just reacting to a pattern I see quite often of: user banned on En, they turn up here a day or a week later, carry on with the same behavior, eventually get indef blocked after a lot of extra work. We have several new users who seem to be following that path now. I've been patrolling New Pages a lot lately, so maybe I'm just noticing it more than I otherwise would. Thanks for the advice, and I'll extend a bit more patience. Gotanda (talk) 03:04, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah, but remember enwiki doesn't tolerate the things that we can turn to our advantage. There are some of our admins who have been "binned" by enwiki before. :) fr33kman 03:07, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

PatrollerEdit

Hello Fr33kman. You recently declined my request for patroller with no comment. I know that I was declined because I didn't have enough article creations. I requested the right because there was another patroller here who made zero article creations, and I thought my new page patrolling and vandalism fighting was good enough. Sorry for wasting your time. Cheers Bmusician 03:49, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It's not a problem with yourself really it's a problem with the admins. We need to remember that patroller is only given to those who have already shown to the simplewiki crowd that they have and can create new articles without any aid whatsoever. I removed the patroller from that account you indicated, it was given in error. Regards fr33kman 04:01, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

EmailEdit

I've sent you an email. Probably, we could talk that way. --Alex (talk) 20:11, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank youEdit

I must thank you specially, Fr33kman, for nudging me to do this. If you hadn't said anything earlier, I would have likely told Barras the same thing I said to you. It was truly a boost of confidence to have two stewards at my back. Osiris (talk) 07:09, 29 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You are welcome, but I think all the praise really belongs to you. fr33kman 09:57, 1 April 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

YobotEdit

I replied to your message in User talk:Yobot. -- Magioladitis (talk) 17:49, 16 April 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Unsourced Japanese footballer articlesEdit

I had started adding {{BLP unsourced}} to the ones that needed it, but then stopped when it looked like the user might start adding references. Do you think it's worth me picking that back up again? --Auntof6 (talk) 03:53, 29 April 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I think leave it for now, we may want to hold a deletion discussion as they are not helping simpleiki. fr33kman 15:23, 29 April 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK, I'll hold off, then, and follow that discussion if/when it happens. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:30, 29 April 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

NLCS entryEdit

Hi Fr33kman, I started creating an entry for our school, North London Collegiate, last night. When I went to continue the entry this mornign, I found it had been deleted. Is there a reason for this? I'm working on it with some of the students in our school, as part of their understanding of Wikipedia. I'll recreate it - please let me know if there is a problem with this. Many thanks, Mshoffren.

You really need to show why the subject is notable, and this really doesn't do that. Osiris (talk) 11:26, 1 May 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

WowEdit

Congrats on becoming a Checkuser, oversighter, and steward in my absence! Razorflame 17:07, 17 June 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Flamey! Long time no hear from. Thanks for the congrats ... fr33kman 15:51, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

GNAAEdit

Can you please redirect GNAA to Gay Nigger Association of America? I can't do it myself since the page is protected. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 14:39, 14 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Never mind. Djsasso took care of it. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 16:36, 17 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Deletion closeEdit

Feel free to close as delete. But it isn't an A4 because to be an A4 it has to not make a claim of notability. It does make a claim of notability by saying they are a professional athlete. Remember the bar is lower on QDs than RfDs. You don't have to proove notability, you only have to claim it. -DJSasso (talk) 18:58, 27 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Claiming that a person is a professional athlete is not an assertion that a person is notable. I'm a professional doctor, does that mean I am asserting notability? No. The author has to say why the subject's being a professional athlete is worthy of notability. In this case no such claim or assertion was made. fr33kman 19:06, 27 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There is a difference. If it can be reasonably understood by someone that all professional athletes are notable (whether or not that is true) then they have a made a claim that the person is notable by being a professional athlete as opposed to an amateur athlete which are generally considered not to be notable. You can't say the same for doctors. Its a context thing, just like if you say someone is on a national TV show they could easily be understood to be notable just for that fact as opposed to someone who is on a local public access. Regardless of the above we actually have a guideline that says all professional soccer players are presumed notable. That is why that one was actually at RfD and not speedied. I should make it clear I am not disagreeing with the delete but by the reasoning. I am seeing this far to often from people A4ing articles that shouldn't be A4'd and to see someone that has been an admin as long as you have do it is really disheartening. -DJSasso (talk) 19:10, 27 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I am just disagreeing that being a professional athlete is notable just by itself. So therefore just being claimed to be one is not an assertion of notability. I understand your stance and I mostly agree with it, but I don't think it fits this case. My brother played for a local hockey team in Canada. He got paid $20 every time he played. He was a player for just 3 months, does that mean he's notable? He was a professional (ie: got paid) athlete. fr33kman 19:30, 27 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes I know you don't agree that being a professional athlete is automatically notable. But the question is when using A4 is can you reasonably assume the author of the article did. That is what you have to consider when you are deciding if a claim was made. I would wager a bet most people likely to show up at a wiki and create an article on a professional athlete would assume that. Because if they thought they were making a claim then we can't say oh they didn't make a claim. As for your brother, on en (and I know we aren't en) they wouldn't consider that professional. The word they use there is "fully professional". ie you have to be able to earn a living off it. Not a semi-pro league which is probably what he probably played for unless it was the CHL which does pay a stipend to its players but is classed as amateur by most organizations except the NCAA. Ironically ice hockey on en.wiki has a higher threshold than soccer because it was easier for our project to come together on a consensus. But basically it takes 100 games at mid level minor league to be considered notable or to win an award at a low level minor league. Or a single game in the NHL or other top national league. -DJSasso (talk) 19:38, 27 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, it was CHL (I think??) ... however, "I would wager a bet most people likely to show up at a wiki and create an article on a professional athlete would assume that." Well, I would wager that most people creating ANY article here would assume the subject was notable. Just claiming professional standing is not automatically notable. The author is required (and the onus is on the author) to declare why being a professional is notable. ie: " X .. is a professional athlete known for <winning Y award| playing for Z team> etc. fr33kman 19:55, 27 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Normally I probably wouldn't have said anything....but you happened to do it right when I had a rant about people A4ing when not appropriate the other day. -DJSasso (talk) 19:47, 27 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Lucky me! ;) fr33kman 19:55, 27 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I brought this up at WP:ST#QD A4 because I think there's obviously some confusion when it comes to this criterion. Osiris (talk) 00:59, 28 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Really concernedEdit

[1] The lack of AGF, of notifying people, of immediately asking for bans without any attempt to even discuss the so called "vandalism," false claims about us working on a meritocracy, etc. really creates a poisonous atmosphere and is a major problem. Why is Simple becoming like this? Ottava Rima (talk) 04:38, 16 November 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Forced user renames coming soon for SULEdit

Hi, sorry for writing in English. I'm writing to ask you, as a bureaucrat of this wiki, to translate and review the notification that will be sent to all users, also on this wiki, who will be forced to change their user name on May 27 and will probably need your help with renames. You may also want to help with the pages m:Rename practices and m:Global rename policy. Thank you, Nemo 17:08, 3 May 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

ang.wikipedia adminEdit

Hi! I came back to here and saw you're a global sysop. I was wondering if you would be able to help me with returning to admin status on ang.wikipedia. I'm looking to get back into it and building it up, and part of that would be returning to admin there. Is there a temp admin or something you would switch on there? Thanks! 99.98.118.46 (talk) 15:38, 11 May 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Your signature in astwikiEdit

Hi Fr33kman. I just made a minor change in your user page in astwiki because your signature was causing a lint error. This is just to let you know that the change from Linter to Remex will break your signature unless you put your colour definitions within the link (in doubt, please, visit your page in astwiki to see what I mean).

RfD nomination of Command (military)Edit

An editor has requested deletion of Command (military), an article you created. We appreciate your changes, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in the nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Please comment on the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2022/Command (military) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also change the article during the discussion to address the nominator's concerns. But you should not remove the requests for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you very much.
