Welcome to the Simple English Wikipedia

Hi, RyanCross/Archives/1! Welcome to Simple English Wikipedia! Thank you for your changes.

If you need help, check out the Help section of Wikipedia, or leave a message on my talk page.

Whenever leaving messages on talk pages, please remember to sign your name by typing four 'tildes' (like this: ~~~~); doing this makes your name and the date show up. Also, it helps if you write something in the box that says 'edit summary' whenever you change an article.

Below are some useful links to make your time here simpler.

If you make a short article please mark it with {{stub}}, our guideline is here: Stubs

Userpage

Hey there RyanCross/Archives! I noticed your userpage is a red link, and I am encouraging you to create your userpage so that it isn't a red link anymore. Please consider this. Razorflame 02:45, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello. I was going to do that later. Articles are more important I believe. Do you have to create your user page? -- Ryan Cross (talk) 02:48, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Not at all. He was just saying it can be fun to have one, and that people can see about you, plus red links don't look very cool. But you don't have to make one. Very good job on the work you've done. Cheers -- America alk 02:58, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I would like to be an active contributer here, yes. Don't worry, I'll create my user page sooner or later. Oh, and thank you for welcoming me, AmericanEagle. -- Ryan Cross (talk) 03:03, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well, help desk, Help:Contents is for editing help. And Simple talk is generally our sort of "Help desk" (where we discuss things and ask questions). If it isn't one of those, then probably not. But Simple talk is like that. Cheers -- America alk 03:44, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ya, a userpage! :) Cheers -- America alk 04:38, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

RE: User rename

To request a name change go to Here. About merging accounts, you can get your username changed (and have your contributions moved) to a new username. If you change your username (which I did a awhile back), all your contributions will be moved too. But say if you also used the account "User:John-is-gone," you can't merge Ryan Cross and that username into one. That's all there is to not being able to merge. Again, username changing (with your changes) is Here. Hope that helps! -- America alk 03:39, 14 June 2008 (UTC) Reply

Hello Ryan, I'm afraid I'm the wrong man to ask, I'm a newbie too! Try putting a post on the Simple talk page or the help page. I'd be interested to know where to find those things, too. --Echoez71 (talk) 08:41, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Categories

Here is the category tree. Please take the categories from there, as EN Wiki often have complex categories that we don't have here. --Gwib -(talk)- 09:34, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Welcoming

Don't consider this as being bitten, more of a sort of gentle nibble. Please don't welcome new users unless they've made a few (or at least one) constructive edit. Most people just create an account and leave (we have over 19,000 accounts created here and less than 70 are active). --Gwib -(talk)- 10:11, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I won't consider it as being bitten. I'm still getting used to these slightly different polices than en-wikipedia has to offer, so I'd consider this a learning experience. Yes, I understand how users do that. Some just create an account, then nothing. Other than that, they either make constructive edits, or just randomly start vandalizing. I understand. -- RyanCross (talk) 10:15, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Have to tread carefully to avoid loosing more active editors. So far two have been lost because of being bitten; glad to see you won't be one of them. --Gwib -(talk)- 10:23, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Don't worry. I won't be leaving anytime soon. I plan to be of big help to the Simple Wikipedia. You can read this for more info of what I do and tend to do. -- RyanCross (talk) 10:44, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your reverts

I have checked a few of them, and to me thry looks good (in other words: nothing out of the usual). Go on like this, and you might be successful here. --Eptalon (talk) 12:09, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

RE: Wikiprojects

Wikipedia:Wikiprojects are the central place for them. And yes, you may start one. But remember that you must create it as "User:RyanCross/Wikiproject" instead of "Wikipedia:Wikiproject yourproject." Only until the community here decides that it is big enough to be moved to "Wikipedia:" namespace. But you can easily create one. I made this one. Hope that helps -- America alk 19:23, 14 June 2008 (UTC) Reply

Copying over content

It is generally tolerated that articles or parts of articles are copied (maninly from EnWP, for obvious reasons). The copying should generally be done to later change the article (in making it easier to understand for our audience). Verbatim (that is: Unmodified) copies will generally be tagged (and deleted after a while). --Eptalon (talk) 19:59, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your help

Barnstar!

I just have to get this off my chest: I think that you have been an excellent contributor to the Simple English Wikipedia so far, and I believe that you are an excellent editor and we could really benefit from your point of view here on the Simple English Wikipedia. I see that you have already started learning about the different quirks about the Simple English Wikipedia and I must say that I am completely amazed at how quickly you have adapted to our Wikipedia. So this is for you:

Barnstar Congratulations: You have been given a Barnstar!

For exploding onto the Simple English Wikipedia scene with your guns firing, I hereby award you this barnstar! Razorflame 22:18, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Razorflame! :) 2 barnstars on my first day here. :D Well, these polices here are pretty similar to en-wikipedia's policies. I'm already an active contributer. I feel I've been here for 1 month already. :P Anyway, thanks for the kind words, and the barnstar. -- RyanCross (talk) 22:22, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Not a problem! You definitely deserve both the kind words and the barnstar! Let's just hope you don't start leaving on us now :) Hope to see you around and editing here! Cheers, Razorflame 22:23, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Don't worry, I won't be leaving anytime soon. I've basically know most of the pages here. There's WP:AIV, WP:RFD, WP:ADMIN, WP:BUR, WP:ADMINSHIP, Wikipedia:WikiProjects, Wikipedia:Changing username, and the basic policies such as Wikipedia:Blocking policy, Wikipedia:Vandalism, etc. Thanks again. :D -- RyanCross (talk) 22:27, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
We call the WP:AIV WP:VIP here :). I see that you are pretty much set into this Wikipedia now :) Cheers, Razorflame 22:28, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Spelling

FYI - heavely is incorrect - heavily is the correct spelling. cynpalCyndypal (talk) 01:59, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

But the reason why I reverted your edit was because you added POV which violates WP:NPOV. I saw that you fixed a spelling error, which I fixed myself after I reverted your edit, but you did add POV which shouldn't be added to articles. I think you should read WP:NPOV for more information about it. Thanks, RyanCross (talk) 02:02, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, but I'm not one of the highest vandalism reverters. And I didn't mean to argue back at you. I'll try to expand more articles, and I doubt I'll get in any big conflicts, I'm not that way. I thank you again for you review. You are becoming a great editor. Cheers -- America alk 05:48, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Reply to message left on Eptalon's page

Well, you can create the Wikipedia project space page, but there has to either be everyone here subconciously following it, or there has to be consensus in the community for it to become a guideline. Cheers, Razorflame 21:35, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

The leave me a message script does not work as intended

It creates mainspace articles, not new sections on your talk page. --Eptalon (talk) 21:41, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

No, it works fine. The user who created the article probably replaced "User talk:RyanCross" with "Conservation status...". --RyanCross (talk) 21:52, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
If the text in the input box should not be changed then don't show us the input box...--Eptalon (talk) 23:04, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
But the inputbox can be changed to message a different users, not just me. Even Pheadriel uses one like mine and no problem ever happened with her inputbox when she was here. Maybe a small note may help, that would better clarify how to use it. --RyanCross (talk) 23:12, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

RE: Possible GA

I have gotten pretty good at copyediting. If you'll pause at it for a few minutes I can look it over. But promoting an article takes so much commitment and work. But I think that I can look it over and copyedit. Sweet userpage by the way, I like the icon look. Cheers -- America alk 00:37, 16 June 2008 (UTC) Reply

Alright. We'll see what it needs. Cheers -- America alk 00:41, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Don't think about nominating that just yet. It still needs much done. We can work together on this one for a GA status. The article has potential and good lenght, just don't get hasty, that may still need hours of work. Cheers -- America alk 01:34, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ryan, I can't be positive about this - but I believe your User:RyRy5 from en.wikipedia? Anyways, keep in mind that simple english wikipedia is not an English wikipedia, like you "copied" Pete Smith (baseball) from en:Pete Smith (baseball). I suggest you look at Wikipedia:How to write Simple English articles. Milk's Favorite Cookie (talk) 11:50, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hmm... I'm still doing some simplifying and revamping to the article. It's fine if your simplifying it. What's not good is copying everything, word by word, and leaving it alone for a very long time. -- Ryan†Cross (talk) 11:53, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

When that happens, we can move, for example, all the players name to that starts with S to List of Magor League Baseball Players/S and have links to the different pages in alphabetical order. But that should take awhile. Cheers -- America alk 15:51, 20 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

The revert

Hi Ryan. Yeah, I saw that. It looked like a fine revert to me, it was a little "spammy" - I would have removed it as well. The one thing you could have done was to manually revert it and add a comment so that the guy who added it can find out easily why you removed it. But otherwise, no worries. The Rambling Man (talk) 08:26, 20 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

In this case, I'd definitely be assuming more good faith than normal and would leave a more personal message than just a template. The edit doesn't appear to be a deliberate attempt to spam, just a poorly thought out edit which contravened a policy which the editor probably knows nothing about. It would be appropriate to provide a gentle warning and perhaps a nudge in the direction of the relevant policy. The Rambling Man (talk) 08:33, 20 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

5,000!

Ohai. Good job! I'm just about to make my 1700 edit. Oh, and good job with all that cleanup you did today. But remember, editcountitis is a horrible thing. Try to saty away from that. Alright, if I must ;) But 5,000 is pretty special. That was based on my my settings. But you'll probably soon pass me by, probably. Cheers and again good night -- America alk 06:44, 21 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I already did copyedit and re-sentence one of the sections. You two were just doing that for your edit counts, weren't you? Anyway, I cannot believe that we're working on Evolution of all things - but we're working to make it complete and neutral - so I can help with that. Cheers -- America alk
You mean that he didn't link the word "district," right? Cheers -- America alk 00:54, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh, come on. Admit it, you were playing with Recent Changes. It's fun. Maybe I'll try it sometime and do minor wikifying like that also - like that "External links" time. Last night I got the sidebar to show only my edits three times in a row (no one else was on). Cheers -- America alk 01:01, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
It's more annoying to fill up Recent Changes than anything. Unless you get a serious RC patroller at the same time as the mass editing, it can push down vandalism which would remain unseen and unreverted. --Gwib -(talk)- 10:11, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Don't worry, during that RC filling today, I was watching from another window the recent changes. There was only one vandal edit I reverted. Although, you would have to be careful if your doing tha, filling recent changes as what Gwib said. -- RyanCross (talk) 10:15, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I love how you say "during that RC filling today", for me it was yesterday :). Good on the revert though. --Gwib -(talk)- 10:26, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

The football thread on Simple Wikipedia talk...

Yeah, if it had been me I'd have advocated a policy of polite "thanks but no thanks" - not the right place for this. Sometimes Wikipedia's take themselves too seriously and a bit of light-hearted entertainment is cool but it's not MySpace or Facebook so really that kind of chat should be minimised. Yes,

I'm there. Cheers -- America alk 04:18, 24 June 2008 (UTC) Reply

GA for baseball uniform

Hey, yes, of course I can help. I need to go over the "What makes a good article" criteria again and I suggest you do too - in fact, copy and paste the criteria onto the article's talk page and we can use it as a checklist. I'll happily copyedit, create stubs etc so point me to what you'd rather I focus on and I'll hit it. The Rambling Man (talk) 07:12, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I know virtually zip about baseball but that won't stop me! I've written a couple of hundred articles on English Wikipedia, nearly 30 featured articles/lists, and that involved a LOT of research and hard work! I'll get on with the references! The Rambling Man (talk) 07:42, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Image placement, according to the manual of style, "Generally, right-alignment is preferred to left- or center-alignment. It is okay for all the pictures in an article to be on the right side of the page." - just for your information... The Rambling Man (talk) 09:42, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
No worries - even the manual of style is just a guideline, not a policy, but it's good to follow it where possible. The Rambling Man (talk) 09:57, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Umm...

You're on? Taking a break? Cheers -- America †alk 23:14, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes I am. I'm not using my laptop, but I am using someone elses for today. I'm not at my hometown either. I'll be back from my .wikibreak probably around 23-5 UTC tomorrow. I'm just not as active as normal until I'm back home. ;) -- RyanCross (talk) 23:21, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Alright. I sent an Email. Cheers -- America †alk 23:38, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Copycat, was my message :P --Gwib -(talk)- 05:30, 27 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hehe, well, he did do the same thing I did. And it wasn't the exact same message. I made "19,000" to "20,000". ;) Sadly, I think he took it as a big bite rather then a small nibble... :/ -- RyanCross (talk) 05:37, 27 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Meh, his loss. --Gwib -(talk)- 05:40, 27 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I guess so. Too bad though. -- RyanCross (talk) 00:42, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I saw

I saw a new user vandalize your user page. Let an admin know if you want your page locked.-- Running  talk , the founder the Wikiproject Anti-Vandalism 05:45, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

No need. I've already gave a report at WP:VIP. If an administrator protects my user page, not even I will be able to edit it. That user will be blocked indef anyway, so there's no need for a protection. Thanks anyway. Regards, RyanCross (talk) 05:48, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

You should be able to your at least 4 days old i belive. If am correct.-- Running  talk , the founder the Wikiproject Anti-Vandalism 05:49, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oh, yes, I forgot about that. Well, the user vandalized after the his final warning, so an administrator should block that user indef shortly. -- RyanCross (talk) 05:53, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Indeed, he has been blocked :) . I do not know why people vandalize in the first place. Gets on peoples nerves alot =\-- Running  talk , the founder the Wikiproject Anti-Vandalism 05:55, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Olive Tree

In case you are unaware, I deleted content as what was there was vandalism. Just to inform you. Prime Contributer (talk) 08:44, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I know. But it was a test page when before you blanked the page. There isn't any use for it to be there since it was a test page. -- RyanCross (talk) 08:45, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
