Adoption

Hi DJDunsie, if you feel you need to be adopted, I would be delighted to help you. Please feel free to ask any question (no matter how trivial), I remember how long it took me to work out categories - I should have asked! I will also watch your edits and make helpful suggestions when I can. --Peterdownunder (talk) 01:06, 24 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello Peter, thank you so, so very much Peter! :) If I'm honest, I don't get categories and redirects. But I'll keep trying. Thank you again, DJDunsie (talk) 06:46, 24 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

How do you make categories? DJDunsie (talk) 08:43, 24 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

We can do categories next week :) --Peterdownunder (talk) 12:16, 24 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
If it's ok for you, please can you tell me now :), thanks DJDunsie (talk · changes) 12:29, 16 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
What category would you like --Peterdownunder (talk) 12:50, 16 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Do you have Hotcat turned on - it is in the "My Preferences" under "Gadgets". This brings up a box at the bottom of a page where you can add categories easily. As you type a name, it starts to find them. or you can add them manually by putting them at the bottom of the article, but before all the interwiki links (if there are any). So you recently made the Airfix article. You could add two suitable cats here: one for modelling and the other for a British company. In double square brackets [ like a link, type Category:Modelling and do the same for Category:British companies. Categories are nearly always plural in name. If you are not sure which category to use, check a similar article and use those, or check the English wikipedia to see what they do.
Thank you very much, Peter. How do you create categories themselves? DJDunsie (talk · changes) 19:11, 19 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
This one drove me crazy the first time, but the answer was just so easy. Just remember that a category should have at least three items in it. Remember that a category has to belong in a category which also belongs in a category and so on... Simply create the category as above, for example Category:DJD's new cat, inside the [ brackets. When you save the page, the cat will be at the bottom as normal but will be red linked not blue. Click on the red link to open the new category, and put in its category in exactly the same way. When you save your new category is complete, and any pages in that category will be listed automatically. To check what I mean, use the edit tab to see what is on an existing category page. Hope that helps.--Peterdownunder (talk) 11:07, 20 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Peter. That helped a lot. I made Category:Modelling and it seems to work, so thank you very much :) DJDunsie (talk · changes) 17:59, 20 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Deletion request

Had a look at Computer microphone and you had just left out one step, which was to add a link to the main deletion request page. Items are added to the top of the list, if you open up the page to edit you can see what others have done. So you just needed to add the following {{Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2011/Computer microphone}} to the top of the list. I think it says that, not very clearly, when you go to create the discussion page. Anyhow, do not be afraid to open up pages to see how things are down. You will not be able to break anything, and even if you do, someone else will be able to fix it. --Peterdownunder (talk) 12:16, 24 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much Peter for taking the time to reply and explain. I see how it is done now and I will do that in future - you just add the code to the top of Wikipedia:Requests for deletion. --DJDunsie (talk) 16:14, 24 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
