Aegean dispute

series of controversies between Greece and Turkey over the Aegean Sea

Aegean Dispute is the name for a number of disputes between Greece and Turkey over sovereignty in the Aegean Sea. These disputes started in the 1970s. Since the early 2000s, both countries are trying to resolve them. The disputes fall into different categories:

  • Which island/rock belongs to what country.
  • Given two islands/rocks, which belong to the different countries, where exactly is the border between them
  • Where is the national airspace of each country
  • Because of different treaties, military operation is not permitted on some islands/some areas
The Aegean Sea near Kos: The status of the islet/rock called Imia/Kardak is one of the biggest problems.
The Aegean Sea: The big landmass on the left is Greece; on the right there is Turkey.

Turkey has also talked about "grey" areas about the status of certain islands/rocks.
