The arrondissement of Saint-Étienne is an arrondissement of France. It is part of the Loire département, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its capital, and the prefecture of the department, is the city of Saint-Étienne.

History

When the Loire department was created in 1793, the arrondissement of Saint-Étienne was part of that original department.[2]

Geography

The arrondissement of Saint-Étienne is bordered to the north and northeast by the Rhône department, to the east by the Isère department, to the southeast by the Ardèche department, to the southwest by the Haute-Loire department, and to the northwest by the arrondissement of Montbrison.

It is the most southern arrondissement of the department and the smallest with an area of 1,041.2 km2 (402.0 sq mi),[3] but the one with more people living in it with a population of 411,402 inhabitants and a density of 395.1 inhabitants/km².[4]
