When the Nord department was created on 1790, the arrondissement of Valenciennes was part of that original department.[2]

Geography change

The arrondissement of Valenciennes is one of the central arrondissement of the Nord department. It borders with Belgium to the north, the Avesnes-sur-Helpe arrondissement to the east, the Cambrai arrondissement to the south and the Douai arrondissement to the west.

The arrondissement of Valenciennes is the second smallest arrondissement of the department with an area of 634.8 square kilometres (245.1 square miles).[3] It has a population of 351,073 inhabitants for a population density of 553.0 inhabitants/km2.[4]
