Arrondissements of the Côte-d'Or department

There are 3 arrondissements in the Côte-d'Or department.[1] The French departments, and in other countries, are divided into arrondissements, which may be translated into English as districts (in some cases, as boroughs). The capital of an arrondissement is called a subprefecture.

If the prefecture (capital) of the department is in an arrondissement, that prefecture is the capital of the arrondissement, acting both as a prefecture and as a subprefecture.

Arrondissements are further divided into communes.

History

Since its creation, the Côte-d'Or department has had few changes:[4]

  • 1790 : creation of the department with seven districts: Châtillon-sur-Seine, Is-sur-Tille, Dijon, Saint-Jean-de-Losne, Beaune, Arnay-le-Duc, Semur-en-Auxois
  • 1800 : creation of the arrondissements: Dijon, Beaune, Châtillon-sur-Seine, Semur-en-Auxois
  • 1926 : the arrondissement of Montbard was made with the arrondissements of Châtillon-sur-Seine and Semur-en-Auxois and the subprefecture is moved from Semur-en-Auxois to Montbard
