Bildungsroman

literary genre that focuses on the psychological and moral growth of the protagonist from youth to adulthood (coming of age)

A Bildungsroman is a kind of novel. It is often called a "coming-of-age" story in English. The word comes from German. "Bildung" means "education", and "Roman", means "novel." [1] This genre is about the psychological and moral growth of the main character from youth to adulthood. [2] The ways the character changes are important.[3][4]

A novel Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is most famous example of the "Bildungsroman".
