Boumerdès

Boumerdès (Arabic: بومرداس) is a coastal city in northern Algeria. It is the capital of Boumerdès Province. It is on the Mediterranean Sea. About 42,000 people live there. Boumerdès is the main industrial and scientific center in Algeria.
It was formerly known as Rocher Noir. This name means "Black Rock" in French.
In 2003, the city was severely hit by a 6.8 magnitude earthquake. About 2,300 people were killed.
