Christchurch Hospital in 1872.

The government voted £1,500 to build a hospital in Christchurch in 1861.[2]

In 2009, a NZ$400 million proposal was made to replace some of the hospital buildings, including a new 450-bed hospital and a helipad. The construction was suppsoed to start in 2011 but was delayed after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake.[3] After the earthquake, the hospital took care of 164 people with serious injuries.[4]

The hospital also took care of 49 people after the Christchurch mosque shootings, 2 of the people died in the hospital.
