Summary

Description
English: Class 508 train at Coulsdon South station Class 508 trains have an interesting history: built as 4-car units by BREL at York in 1979-80, they were the first sliding-door trains intended to replace slam-door stock on the Southern Region. However they were quickly transferred to Lancashire to work on the Liverpool-Southport service, although because gradients there are more severe, they lost one of the centre cars, an unpowered trailer. These trailers were incorporated into Class 455/9 units then being built for the London South Western suburban services. Recently many of the Class 508 units, still now three cars, have returned to the South and work on the South Eastern. This unit is still in old Connex livery.
