Object history
Deutsch: Die Entstehung und Entwicklung der Gemeinde Ettal ist aufs Engste mit der berühmten Benediktinerabtei im Graswangtal verbunden. Deshalb enthält das Gemeindewappen heraldische Elemente mit Bezug zum Kloster. Der schwarze Adler, der in allen Darstellungen als Doppeladler ausgeführt ist, verweist auf Ludwig den Bayern, der das Kloster 1332 gegründet hat und den Adler als Kaiser im Wappen führte. Der Doppeladler findet sich auch im neueren Wappen des Klosters. Das Wort etal in gotischen Minuskeln stand auf dem ältesten, 1420 erstmals nachweisbaren Stiftswappen und wurde bei zeitweiser Änderung des Schriftzugs bis Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts als alleiniges Klosterwappen geführt.
