In 1977 he was elected Socialist mayor of Montpellier, remaining there until 2004. In the same year that he resigned as mayor, he was elected president of the Regional Council of Languedoc-Roussillon and held the position until his death in October 2010, aged 72 year.[1] In January 2007, he was expelled from the Socialist Party for statements against the Harki, Arab fighters who fought alongside the French army against Algerian independents, after which he presented an alternative candidacy with which he won the regional elections in March of the same year. After his death, Christian Bourquin took his place.[2]

Georges Frêche graduated from HEC Paris.[3]
