Gerda Pöting

German athletics competitor (1907–1997)

Gerda Marta Hedwig Elisabet Pöting (15 July 1907 — 13 September 1997) was a German track and field athlete, active during the 1920s, during the early era of women’s athletics.[1][2] She was a member of Berliner SC. In the 4 x 100 meters relay she was world record holder. She was three times national champion.

As a member of Berliner SC, Köhler had her main successes in the 4 x 100 metres relay. Next to the relay she also competed in the 80 metres, 100 metres and long jump.[3]

She became as a member of the Berliner SC 4 x 100 meters relay team national champion in 1924, 1925 and 1926. She won the bronze medal with the team in 1927.[4][5] Individually she won at the German Athletics Championships the bronze medal in the 100 metres in 1925 behind Elaine Gütschow and Gundel Wittmann.[6]

Together with teammates Lilli Henoch, Cläre Voss and Charlotte Köhler she set an official world record in the 4 × 100 meter relay in Köln on 11 July 1926 with a time of 50.3 seconds.[7] The team set before on 13 July 1924 already the German national record with a time of 51.6 seconds during a competition in Berlin.

Pöting also competing internationally, including at the 1926 Berlin international women's athletics meeting where she won together with Gundel Wittmann [de], Lilly Henoch and Anneliese Röstel the 4 x 100 metres relay and finishing third in the 80 metres event.[8]
