Gunter van den Berg

Dutch basketball player (1943-2015)

Ir. Gunter Gerben van den Berg (6 January 1943 – 9 May 2015) was a Dutch basketball player. He played with The Wolves Amsterdam and the Netherlands men's national basketball team.[1]

Van den Berg learned to play basketball according to himself at the Museumplein basketball court.[2] Van den Berg started playing with Monark, the sister club of The Wolves Amsterdam. When he transferred from Monark to The Wolves Amsterdam, he skipped the juniors and ended up immediately in the first of The Wolves. With The Woves Van den Berg became national champion in 1960 and 1961. These year they qualified as being national champion for the FIBA European Champions Cup. In both years they were eliminated in the first round. At the 1960–61 FIBA European Champions Cup by BC Sparta Praha and at the 1961–62 FIBA European Champions Cup by Alsace de Bagnolet.[1]

Van den Berg made his debut for the Netherlands men's national basketball team at the age of 17 years old on 31 October 1960 against Denmark. He played a total of 8 international matches, including at EuroBasket 1961.[1][3] With 165 long, he was one of the shortest Dutch international basketball players ever.[2]

Van den Berg was born in Amsterdam on 6 January 1943. He studied and became engineer. He died unexpectedly on 9 May 2015 at the age of 72 years old. He is burried in Breukelen].[1]
