Historic counties of England

geographical designations for areas of England, based on historical traditions

The historic counties of England are subdivisions of England.[1] They were used for various functions for several hundred years[2] and continue to form the basis of modern local government.[3][4] They are alternatively known as ancient counties[5] and traditional counties.
