Historical society

organization that collects, researches, interprets and preserves information or items of historical interest

A historical society (sometimes also preservation society) is group that collects, keeps, and understands historical information or historical things. These groups were created to help people in the future understand their heritage.

Historical societies can do many different things. Some do genealogy, some try to protect historical buildings, some focus on certain towns, countries, people, railroads, or religious groups.[1]
