Belgian historian and university professor (1934-2024)

Hugo de Schepper (12 November 1934 – 29 December 2024) was a Dutch naturalized, Belgian historian and university professor of General and Dutch history of the Modern Period (before 1870).

Biography

De Schepper was born in Aalst, Belgium in 1934. He worked as a lecturer in higher secondary education (1956-1963); state archivist at the National Archives of Belgium (1963-1975); full professor of constitutional legal history at the University of Amsterdam (until 1981) and professor of General and Dutch history of the Modern Period before 1870 at the Radboud University Nijmegen. He published mainly on political and institutional history of the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th-century.[1]

In 1973, De Schepper was laureate of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts. He was co-editor and author of Algemene Geschiedenis der Nederlanden (parts V-IX, 1979-1982). He also participated in the European Science Foundation's European research priority area on ‘Origins of the Modern State, 12th-18th century’ and was a member of the working group 'The Legal Instruments of Power', led by Prof. Antonio Padoa-Schioppa, in 1989-1994.[2]

De Schepper died in Nijmegen on 29 December 2024, at the age of 90.[3]
