Hyperlipidemia happens when there is too many lipids, like cholesterol, in the blood. It can cause health problems.[1][2] There is a type of hyperlipidemia that runs in families, called familial hyperlipidemia.[3] Cholesterol may be lowered by not being overweight, or by being physically active.[4] Someone's age, race, or sex may also affect cholesterol.[4]
