Ihab Ilyas

Canadian-Egyptian computer scientist

Ihab Francis Ilyas is a computer scientist and a professor of computer science at the University of Waterloo.[1][2]

Ilyas was born and raised in Alexandria, Egypt. He completed bachelor's and master's degrees at Alexandria University in 1995 and 1999, and earned his PhD at Purdue University in 2004. Ilyas held a Cheriton Faculty Fellowship[3] at the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science from 2013 to 2016 and he received the Google Faculty Award in 2014.[4]

He is also the leader of the Knowledge Platform team at Apple Inc.[5] He co-founded Tamr Inc. and Inductiv Inc., both of which focus on large-scale data integration and cleaning. Apple acquired Inductiv in 2020.[6] Ilyas is known for his research on database systems and data science, including data quality, data cleaning, managing uncertain data, and rank-aware query processing. He has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the field, including being named an ACM Fellow in 2020,[7][8] an IEEE Fellow in 2022,[9] and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2024.[10] In 2024, he also received the 2024 C.C. Gotlieb Computer Award from IEEE Canada in recognition of his contributions to building large-scale machine learning systems for data integration, data cleaning and knowledge construction.[11]
