Imprisonment
restraint of a person's liberty by judicial or other detention
Imprisonment or incarceration is the holding of people in prison or a place against their will by a sentence. Historically, this meant that the people were put in a prison cell, or in a pillory or in stocks. The pillory or the stocks were also a form of public humiliation. In modern times, there are also other forms, like placing someone under house arrest or using electronic tagging.
