Jean Stein
American writer and editor (1934-2017)
Jean Babette Stein (February 9, 1934 – April 30, 2017) was an American author and editor of Jewish descent. She was born in Los Angeles, California. She was known for her works West of Eden and Edie: American Girl.[1] She also wrote biographies of United States Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. In the late 1950s, she was an editor at The Paris Review. From 1990 to 2004, she was editor of the literary/visual arts magazine Grand Street.

Stein was married to businessman William vanden Heuvel from 1958 until they divorced in the 1970s. to Nobel Prize-winner Torsten Wiesel from 1995 until they divorced in 2007.
Stein committed suicide by jumping off from her apartment building in New York City on April 30, 2017, aged 83.[2]
