John Oxley

John Joseph William Molesworth Oxley (1784—1828) was a Royal Navy officer who became Surveyor-General of Australia, and an important early explorer.^[1] He first arrived in Sydney in 1802. He is famous for his exploration of the Lachlan River. His findings helped the later explorations of Captain Charles Sturt and Major Thomas Mitchell. He died in Sydney in 1828.

In 1901 an Australian electoral division was named Oxley after him.
