Keri Hulme

New Zealand writer

Keri Ann Ruhi Hulme (9 March 1947 – 27 December 2021) was a New Zealand novelist, poet and short-story writer. She was of Kāi Tahu and Kāti Māmoe descent.[1] Her novel, The Bone People, won the Man Booker Prize in 1985. She was the first New Zealander to win the award.[2] She also wrote under the pen name Kai Tainui. Hulme was born in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Hulme died at her home in Waimate, New Zealand on 27 December 2021 from problems caused by dementia, aged 74.[3]
