Local board of health
former unit of local government in england and wales
Local boards of health were the first public health organisations in England and Wales. They were set up under the Public Health Act 1848 after cholera epidemics had killed a lot of people in cities.[1] They had the power to control sewers, clean the streets, and manage other health risks including slaughterhouses and supply clean water to their districts.
