The Montenegrin–Ottoman War (1852–1853) started after the Ottoman Empire retaliated against Montenegro for secretly helping rebels in Herzegovina.

Background
changeIn 1852, Danilo, returning from Russia, declared himself "Prince of Montenegro and the Hills," changing Montenegro from a theocracy to a principality. Although Montenegro was still an Ottoman vassal, the Ottomans attacked after Montenegro's secret support for the Herzegovinian rebels was revealed.
