Bomb Coptic Churchs in the Nile Delta City of Tanta and Alexandria
On Palm Sunday, 9 April 2017, twin suicide bombings at St. George's Church in the northern Egyptian city of Tanta on the Nile delta, and Saint Mark's Coptic Orthodox Cathedral, the principal church in Alexandria, seat of the Coptic papacy.[1]
In the aftermath of the attacks, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi gathered the country's security council. At least 43 people were killed and more than 136 injured. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – Sinai Province (also called ISIS or ISIL) group claimed responsibility for the attacks in an online statement.[2]
