Papanasam is a town in Tirunelveli district. This town is where the Thamirabarani River rises. In one of Papanasam's temples, a ritual is held to wash away sins. People throw the clothes they wear into the Thamirabarani River. The movie acted by Kamalahaasan was shot in and named Papanasam.
