Before playing in the NHL, Kontiola played eight seasons with Tappara and their junior teams. He was drafted 196th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He would play for their AHL-affiliate team, the Rockford IceHogs.

On November 25, 2007, the Blackhawks would call Kontiola up to play for the team.[1] The same day, Kontiola would make his NHL debut in a 2—0 loss to the Vancouver Canucks. He would be sent back down two days later.[2]

On March 4, 2009, the Blackhawks traded Kontiola along with James Wisniewski to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Samuel Påhlsson, Logan Stephenson and a conditional draft pick.[3] He did not play for the Ducks.

On May 26, Kontiola left the NHL and decided to sign a two-year contract to play for Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).[4]

On May 3, 2011, he would sign with Traktor Chelyabinsk.[5]

On July 3, 2014, he would travel back to North America and sign a tryout contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He would end up playing for their AHL-affiliate team Toronto Marlies.[6] On November 20, 2014, he would be released.[7]
