Punitive damages
damages assessed in order to punish the defendant for outrageous conduct
Punitive damages are a remedy given by a court of equity in a lawsuit.[1] It is used when a court believes that the defendant needs more punishment to be reformed or stopped from doing the action that caused them to be sued.[2]
